When you softly cuss but long to scream
When you eat real light but wanna drink real hard
you walk a mile in your head but your feet move a yard
When you prune in the bath as your soul walks the plank
When your watching grey weather from inside your fish tank
When time is tort and your skin starts to rust
When you strangle your eyes from staring in lust
When you weep in the trees but smile in the cage
When you write in your book and burn every page
When you want to throw up but you swallow your spit
You chew on chip butty when you’d rather throw it
at every fool you bump past in the crowd in the line
You hard hate the happy from your chest’s bag of wine
When you see the street stagger under any excuse
When you flee through the years of masked bottle abuse
A stranger writes a book and changes your life
A stranger gets stabbed and a stranger’s his wife
Lies fly round her glass but drop dead in your ear
When an ugly home smiles with two teeth and a tear
Somewhere floats a soul mirrored in your soup
they’ve swaned in your eyes they’ve kicked in your boots
Starving sonnets break hearts blind in two
God rots in a coke can. Angels sweat on the tube.

A pretty chav’s caught thieving 
his pocket full of sweets
telling pretty stories 
through council flattened teeth
The boxer bites banana his son punches his palms
The mother’s cooking beans on toast blue bruises on her arms
The farmer and his best friend
 whimper as they herd the sheep
When the old man blows his brains out 
and spills the chicken feed
Through a fat and angry bouncer 
to a sad and lonely pint
Beneath a sink of soggy tea bags 
is a cupboard full of mice
The poetry of Pinocchio put Woolworths on the web

The cool class clown is caned
 his sadness soft as lead
A sympathetic handshake
enough to clutter up a smile.
There’s nothing like an ugly town
to make you feel worth while.
